WIPs on my desk …

Current Mood:Playful emoticon Playful

So okay, I’m starting to re-enter the comic world, at long long last, and it feels a little like coming home! 🙂

Though I’m just doing some comic art cards and commissions … and not collecting, because, well, that’s an addiction and I just get wayyyyyy out of hand when I start reading comics. LOL.

So anyways, turns out there is a huge community for comic art out there (who knew? I suppose *I* should have,  lol!) and there is even a huge art card community – though they call them personal sketch cards. Geeez when I stopped collecting in the late 90’s, cards weren’t really all that big of a deal – but now it’s a huge industry!

So I scored some prismacolor markers, and started playing with those … I’ve been fascinated by what other artists are putting out with THEIR markers and OMG – these things are SOOOO freaking COOL! So if anyone wants to send me presents?? Send me these markers – cuz they are EXPENSIVE! (seriously, if you want to show me HUGE love, send me markers – or gift certificates to Michael’s! hee hee!)

Anyways, thought I’d give folks a little peek at some of the cards I started on last night …

The chibi Dawn card (from Lisner’s Dawn comic for those that have never seen his AMAZING comic!) is currently my favorite right now … I couldn’t resist trying to do an uber-cute chibi of her, and I think it came out really nicely so far!

What do you think?

Art supplies that I dream of owning someday ….

We all have them, I know, those daydreams of wishing we could afford this or that art supply to create with.

Right now I am SERIOUSLY wishing that I could get a hold of one of the larger prismacolor pen sets, and it KILLS me because I found a GREAT set for dirt cheap on ebay, BUT I have NO way to buy them – it’s just a freaking crying shame!

By the time my listings expire and they are possibly purchased to getting the money, that great deal is going to fly right past me, once again. *sigh* Wouldn’t it freaking ROCK to have a patron or two that would be willing to fund purchasing art supplies in order to be able to create even more artwork … it’s soooo hard to be able to afford the little I do get in supplies, that sometimes I just wish I’d find someone willing to toss some art supplies off some wish list as a surprise gift a couple times a year, LOL!

Actually that might not be such a horrid idea, to create a gift wish list – that way my family and friends at the very least would be able to use that if they ever wanted to buy me art stuff but weren’t sure what I’d love to have!

Wouldn’t that be nice though? To have a surprise gift in the mail off your art supply wish list unexpectedly arrive one day???

What do you think? I’d love to hear what your thoughts on that would be!

I’m Going to College!!

I’ve decided to go back to school and get myself a honest to gosh degree!

And even better, it’s the college of my dreams, the Academy of Art in San Francisco! I have wanted to go there since I was a teenager!!

Now I’m just totally obsessed with trying to earn enough money selling whatever I can to cover the enrollment fee, the application fee and the basic supplies!

Once I actually an enrolled THEN I can start trying to see about loans or financial aid – turns out … while there is aid and help for people that already ARE students, *nothing* appears to exist out there to help a person *BECOME* a student. You actually have to be accepted AND enrolled as a student before any institution will apparently even consider you at all.

Which is REALLY frustrating – I was hoping to get a loan and then use THAT to pay the initial fees, but it doesn’t appear that is remotely a possibility.

Anyways. If you are someone that likes to support my work – NOW is the time to buy, I’m going to be offering a LOT of things that I’d decided to keep for my own collection again, and I’m only really to do this because I’ve decided that my education needs to come first.

My “sale” isn’t so much a sale where I reduce prices – because the truth is, I need to cover these fees if I want to go to college this semester and things just aren’t selling like they used to in this economy – but it is a sale in that I’m willing to let choice pieces go that I had previously decided were not ever going to be for sale ever or ones that I had decided I’d never offer for sale again.

Art Buddies …

Man sometimes I miss school (even though it’s been like 2 decades since I’ve been in school, lol) because there was ONE really cool thing about school – my art buddies!

I’ve been having a long term fight with myself to re-find my inner artist – those of you that know me, know that part of my story well. Those that do not know me, well – suffice it to say that I somehow, in my teens buried a very large part of myself without realizing it, and part of that was my art.

I figured it out in my mid-30’s – and have been battling to reconnect to the wildly creative and productive and prolific artist that I truly am inside. It hasn’t been easy, progress has been painfully slow and sometimes there hasn’t been progress at all, but ever so surely, little step by little step, I have been moving back into myself.

I’m really close right now. I can smell it, sometimes – I can almost touch it. It runs under my skin, teases my nerves, flirts with my muses, but dances away, like some succubus that appears and leaves seductively in the night.

I know it’s connected to my spirituality – or rather that it is missing for the same reasons that my spirituality went missing … whatever happened, happened to them both at the same time, awnd they ARE deeply and unabashedly connected and entwined.

I’ve been reclaiming my spirituality at the same time, and I think I’m RIGHT THERE too – almost plugged in … so close, so close. It taunts me even as it lures me in deeper, closer, darker, lighter, until I am doing a strange lurching waltz with some shapeless intangible thing that exists outside of myself whilst at the same time, inside of myself.

I think what’s missing is that communial thing artists have when they get together in a group and create. When they come together and talk regularly. Yes, I know I get this from my myriad of groups, mailing lists, forums, and artist communities online, BUT .. there is something special about when artists are right THERE – in the flesh with you.

It’s a pristine and magical kind of connection – it’s fun and it has it’s own unique charge, it’s own vibe. I seriously need to find me some good art buddies – who like to get together for gab sessions and maybe even a get together to create together. Yeah, that sounds SO cool! I’d love to have art buddies that were local to me and that I could visit regularly!

Does any of this make sense? Shoot, maybe it’s the extra shot of espresso talking. LOL! But all I want to do right now is create, and here I am stuck at work. Ugh. But in my mind, in my psyche, I’m waltzing with my paintbrushes and boogieing down with my clay right now, unchained, untamed, and utterly free. Whee! 🙂

Sexy Comic Book ACEOs!! Marvel, DC, etc!

Yup! I am FINALLY doing it! I am an ex-hardcore comic book and action figure collector that used to have an 80-90 dollar a week habit and that was just in comic books. LOL. It would easily jump during “crossover hell season” (LOL!) when I would then have to buy titles that I didn’t normally follow to get the full story arc.

From about the age of 7 – I always wanted to draw comic books. I even created a few comics with my brother when he was 9 and I was 7, and I was collecting comics from the age of six, so comics and I have had a long long love affair with each other. I tried a few contests with Image Comics and even went so far as to request a submission package (back when they actually SENT such things out LOL!) from Marvel and Image but never sent them back … as I was terrified of deadlines. I still am actually, lol!

Anyway, I gave up my dream of earning a living drawing comics a decade or so ago … andf slowly weaned myself off my comic collecting habit when I became a little more poor. Now I treat myself like a recovering alcoholic, I try to stay away from comic shops, though they lure and beckon me with a sordid sweetness that I relish so much! LOL. Every so often though – I dive into one and try to get out as fast as I can before I get sucked back into the story lines – usually because I’m breaking down and buying another action figure … last time I did that was for the Dawn action figures, because like well c’mon man, it’s DAWN! I totally HAD to break for Dawn! LOL!

Fast forward to this week … I realized hey – why not have some fun and do some ACEOs with comic characters and hey, make ’em sexy nudes! Soooooooooooo I did. Threw down a Supergirl in a tight half shirt and panties and a nude Rogue. Cuz yanno poor Rogue never gets to bop around all in the buff and it’s sad cuz you know, she is like so BUFF! lol

Besides figured I might as well start hammering out the Marvel universe characters NOW since Disney went and bought them .. sure as hell they will start cracking down on all the fan art artists that draw and sell pics of Marvel characters. I’m rather angry at myself for waiting THIS long – such a shame to see Disney ruin more artistic expression by grabbing up the Marvel characters, it totally bums me out. I sure hope they don’t totally censor the Marvel universe!

Stop eBay from grabbing your pictures!!

I just got a heads up about this!!

I know that some of you are probably on eBay and I got this email in another group I belong to so thought it might be helpful for some of you. Basically, it seems that eBay will be taking your photos, images, etc. and putting them in an online catalog that any eBay user can use for their own listings. You might scroll down and read this if it applies to you – and the steps that are listed to show you how to correct that. Apparently, you have until only August 31st to change your settings!

This was on another Board and I followed the instructions and yes indeed, my default for eBay using any of my photos was on “yes.” Follow the steps below to disable this. Notice that this would include photos of your art product, your photography. ..all go into a general photo bank that ANYONE can use to illustrate their sale item. Please share this with anyone you know who sells on eBay.

If you sell anything on eBay, you need to read this warning about how eBay plans to use your listing photos without creators’ permission!!!

Starting on August 31st, eBay is going to institute a new policy where photos you upload to any listing are put into a “catalog” of online images that any eBay user can then use for their own listings. The default setting for this is opt-in, which is a problem if you, like me, consider your photographs your property and want to control how they are used and by whom.

A copyright notice is posted with a link to your user profile, but no additional information is given, and the link is quite small.

Since the default setting is opt-in, and EBAY HAS NOT SENT MESSAGES OUT ABOUT THIS!

A lot of people are going to be caught flat-footed by this new policy.

Again, the default for this setting is YES, you have opted in. Meaning “Yes, I will allow eBay to make my photos available for anyone to use.

If you do not want eBay to make the photos you upload to all of your future auctions available to other users in a sort of catalog process, you need to go change your settings *NOW*, before August 31st! If you opt out after that date, any photos you upload between the 31st and when you opt out will still be eligible for inclusion in their “catalog.”

In order to opt out of this so-not-okay process, do the following. Hopefully your eBay pages look like mine. (I followed this easily)

1) Go to your eBay summary page (“My eBay”).

2) On the left-hand side, there are three tabs that say “Activity,” “Messages,” and “Account.” Hover over the “Account” tab. (I did not need to hover, hovering did nothing for me, if yours doesn’t either, just go to the third step.)

3) A drop-down list will appear. Move your mouse down to “Site Preferences” and click. (Mine was simply listed under the Account section, again I did not need to hover, hovering did nothing for me)

4) You will be taken to a page with a list of site options for selling, shipping, and listing. About the sixth from the top is “Share your Photos.” Click on the word “Show” on the right hand side next to this option.

5) The box will expand, and if you are opted in, “Yes” will appear. If you are opted out, “no” will appear. A small “Edit” link will appear below the “Show” link. If you want to change the settings, click “Edit.”

6) You will be taken to a new page with the following text: If you’d like to opt-out of this program, please do so by checking this box and clicking the “submit” button below. (If you opt-out before August 31, 2009, none of your photos will be considered for inclusion in this program unless you opt back in at a later time. If you opt-out after August 31, 2009, any photos we select for inclusion in this program prior to your opt-out may continue to be used in the catalog)

7) If you want to opt out of the program, check the checkbox on the left-hand side next to the text, then go down and click the “Submit” button.

8 ) You will go back to the settings screen you were just on, and there will be a green checkmark and a confirmation message. Go down to the “Share your Photos” option again and click “Show.” Your setting should now appear as “No.”

I am sure that this will be a useful feature for some people, for some items, but the automatic opt-in is not okay with me at all, as I don’t want my photographs used to illustrate someone else’s auction for a different item, not for any reason whatsoever.

I thought you should all be warned.

Please spread the word.

::::end crosspost:::

Please feel free to crosspost this to any group that hasn’t seen this yet!

I also checked mine and it was sent to “Yes” in there (along with the notice about August 31st) and you can beat your bottom dollar that I changed mine!
